A

Asynchronous evaluation

The process by which B2B buyers research and assess a solution outside of scheduled meetings or live sales interactions. Most of the modern B2B buying journey is asynchronous -- buyers read, discuss internally, consult AI tools, and form views on their own timeline. Buyer enablement is designed to support this process with governed, accurate expertise.

B

Buyer champion

The individual within a buying organisation who advocates internally for a particular solution. The champion typically attended the initial sales interactions and is responsible for communicating the value proposition to the wider buying committee. In complex deals, the champion's ability to accurately represent the solution internally is critical -- and is often undermined by confident misunderstanding.

Buyer enablement

The information, tools, and expertise provided to buyers to help them complete critical buying tasks faster and more easily. Gartner defines it as "the information and tools provided to buyers to help them complete critical buying tasks faster and more easily." Broader definitions include any systematic approach to ensuring buyers can evaluate, understand, and make confident purchasing decisions independently. Buyer enablement is distinct from sales enablement in that it serves buyers -- not sellers -- and operates throughout the portions of the buying journey where sales representatives are not present. For a complete guide, see What is buyer enablement?

Buyer journey

The full arc of activity -- from initial problem identification through to purchase decision -- that a B2B buyer undergoes before selecting a solution. The modern B2B buyer journey is largely self-directed: Gartner research shows buyers spend only 17% of their total buying time in contact with potential vendors. The buyer journey is not linear and typically involves multiple stakeholders, multiple channels, and extensive independent research.

Buying committee

The group of stakeholders within an organisation who are involved in a B2B purchase decision. Modern buying committees typically include six to ten people across multiple roles -- finance, technical, operational, and executive -- each with different priorities, different evaluation criteria, and different levels of familiarity with the solution. Managing a buying committee effectively is one of the primary challenges that buyer enablement addresses. For a fuller treatment, see The B2B buying committee: what it is and why it makes deals stall.

Buying jobs

Gartner's framework for describing the specific tasks buyers need to complete to make a purchase decision. The four categories are: problem identification (recognising and defining the problem), solution exploration (researching available options), requirements building (defining what a solution must do), and supplier selection (choosing between specific vendors). Buyer enablement is designed to support buyers across all four categories.

C

Confident misunderstanding

The state in which a buyer believes they have an accurate understanding of a solution, but their mental model is based on incomplete, inaccurate, or out-of-context information gathered through self-directed research. Confident misunderstanding is more common than widely recognised, and more difficult to correct than straightforward ignorance -- because new information lands as a challenge to an existing belief rather than as new knowledge. It manifests as late-stage objections, stalled deals, and post-sale disappointment.

D

Deal dark

The state in which a deal that appeared to have momentum goes silent -- a champion stops responding, meetings are cancelled or rescheduled indefinitely, and sales loses visibility into what is happening. Deals go dark most often because a champion has encountered an internal barrier they cannot resolve: a stakeholder objection they cannot answer, a misconception they cannot correct, or an alignment conversation that has stalled.

Demo automation

A category of tools that allow buyers to experience a product independently through interactive, self-paced demonstrations -- without requiring a scheduled session with a sales engineer. Demo automation platforms enable buyers to explore product capabilities at their own pace and share the experience with colleagues. They support early-stage evaluation and self-directed discovery.

Digital sales room

A shared virtual workspace where buyers and sellers collaborate throughout an active deal. Digital sales rooms centralise deal content -- presentations, proposals, contracts, case studies -- in a single organised location accessible to all relevant stakeholders. They track engagement, support coordination, and reduce friction. Digital sales rooms address a coordination and content management problem. See our deep-dive on digital sales rooms.

G

Governed evaluation

A buyer evaluation process in which the accuracy and consistency of what buyers learn is actively managed and maintained by the selling organisation. In a governed evaluation, buyers can ask questions and explore independently -- but the answers they receive are grounded in approved, sales-verified knowledge rather than internet sources, third-party reviews, or ungoverned AI summaries. Governed evaluation is the mechanism through which buyer enablement prevents confident misunderstanding.

L

Late-stage objection

An objection raised by a buyer or stakeholder late in the deal cycle -- often in the final stages of negotiation or immediately before a decision -- that could and should have been addressed earlier. Late-stage objections are frequently the product of confident misunderstanding: a stakeholder formed an incorrect view during self-directed research and that view was never corrected before it hardened into a buying concern.

M

Multi-threading

The sales practice of building relationships and maintaining engagement with multiple stakeholders within a buying organisation simultaneously, rather than relying on a single champion. Multi-threading reduces deal risk by ensuring the vendor's perspective is present across the buying committee -- not filtered through a single point of contact who may lack the information or influence to move the deal forward.

R

Rep-free buying experience

A buying journey in which the buyer prefers to research, evaluate, and make decisions without direct interaction with a sales representative. Gartner research published in 2026 found that 67% of B2B buyers prefer a rep-free experience overall. This preference does not mean buyers reject all vendor interaction -- it means they prefer to control when and how they engage, and to conduct independent evaluation before committing to sales conversations.

Revenue enablement

An expanded definition of sales enablement that encompasses customer success, partner teams, and other revenue-generating functions in addition to sales. Revenue enablement platforms -- including Seismic (combined with Highspot from 2026) and Showpad -- are the dominant tool category for equipping seller-facing teams. Revenue enablement is seller-facing; buyer enablement is buyer-facing. Both address different parts of the same commercial challenge.

S

Sales enablement

The process of equipping revenue-facing teams -- primarily sales representatives -- with the content, training, tools, and processes they need to have effective sales conversations. Gartner defines sales enablement as providing "the sales organisation with the information, content, and tools that help salespeople sell more effectively." Sales enablement is seller-facing by design. It does not operate in the portions of the buying journey where sellers are absent. For the full distinction, see Buyer enablement vs sales enablement.

Sales governance

The process by which a selling organisation controls the accuracy, consistency, and positioning of the information buyers receive during their evaluation. Without sales governance, buyers form their understanding from whatever sources are available -- AI summaries, competitor sites, peer recommendations, outdated reviews -- none of which are accountable to the seller's actual positioning.

Self-directed buying

The pattern of B2B buyer behaviour in which buyers conduct the majority of their evaluation independently -- through digital research, AI-assisted summaries, peer consultation, and internal discussion -- rather than through guided vendor interaction. Gartner research shows B2B buyers spend only 17% of their total buying time with vendors; the rest is self-directed. Self-directed buying is the structural reality that buyer enablement is designed to address.

Stakeholder alignment

The state in which the key members of a buying committee share a consistent, accurate understanding of the problem they are solving, the solution they are evaluating, and the criteria by which they are making their decision. Gartner research shows 74% of B2B buying teams demonstrate unhealthy conflict during decision processes -- often because different stakeholders formed different understandings from different sources. Achieving stakeholder alignment is one of the most important outcomes that effective buyer enablement delivers.
